Workshop: In the Moment, Embrace The Weird

This week is all about sharpening our presence, reacting authentically in the moment, and truly embracing the delightful absurdity that improv can offer. Let's dive into spontaneity and non-verbal communication!

1. Hat Games: Spontaneity from the Draw!

  • The Setup: Imagine a hat brimming with possibilities! We'll pass around a hat filled with various prompts – these could be character traits ("a nervous astronaut"), emotions ("extreme joy"), specific locations ("a bouncy castle on the moon"), or random objects ("a single, sentient sock").
  • The Challenge: The challenge? To instantly perform a scene based on whatever you draw, solo or with partners. You'll need to embrace spontaneity and roll with the unexpected connections that arise.
  • Keeping it Fresh: We'll vary the types of prompts in the hat to keep the exercise fresh, challenging, and always surprising. This is fantastic for quick thinking and diving headfirst into the unknown!

2. Gibberish Conversations: Speaking Without Words

  • The Setup: Ready to communicate beyond language? In this exercise, you'll have entire conversations, arguments, or heartfelt exchanges using only gibberish – made-up, nonsensical sounds.
  • The Focus: Since there are no real words, the entire focus shifts to your physicality, vocal tone, emotional expression, and subtext to convey meaning.
  • Exploring Scenarios: We'll try this in different scenarios (e.g., a first date where both are incredibly nervous, a high-stakes job interview, a heated argument between roommates over the last piece of cake) to see how the lack of understandable verbal communication impacts the scene's dynamics and clarity.
  • The Magic: You'll discover just how much you can convey and understand without relying on actual words. It’s a brilliant way to sharpen your non-verbal storytelling and emotional expression.

3. Unleashing Physical Comedy: Twitching, Topping, and Small Action/Big Reaction

  • The Setup: Time to get physical and explore some classic comedy techniques that rely on exaggeration, timing, and surprise!
  • We'll Dive Into:
    • Twitching: Think sudden, (often) involuntary-seeming movements that can add surprise, character quirks, or comedic punctuation to a moment.
    • Topping: This is all about escalating a previous action, idea, or emotion offered by another player, taking it to the next comedic (and often more absurd) level.
    • Paperflicking (or Small Action, Big Reaction): Learn how a tiny, almost insignificant gesture or action (like casually flicking a tiny piece of paper, or a subtle eye-roll) can be used to trigger an hilariously oversized or unexpected reaction from another character.
  • The Goal: These techniques emphasize using your body, precise timing, and the element of surprise to add another layer of fun, absurdity, and engagement to your scenes.
